Since it first hatched in 1993 Stiles & Drewe’s musical HONK! has winged its way around the world in over 8000 productions. HONK! is now preparing to land on the pond at the Old Joint Stock Theatre in November for a week of very special performances.
HONK! is a world-wide stage sensation that has been seen by over 5 million people.
“...Imagine the colour and wit of Disney’s Jungle Book, mixed with the vivacity of ‘40s Hollywood musicals, exuberantly stage, and you still only have some idea of how stonkingly brilliant this treat is...”
(Time Out on the 2000 National Theatre production)

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling", “HONK!” tells the story of an odd looking baby duck, Ugly, and his quest to find his mother.
Soon after Ugly is born, he is seduced away by a wily Cat who wants to eat Ugly for dinner. Eventually, Ugly manages to escape but has no idea how to return home.
Along his way, he encounters a beautiful swan, Penny, tangled in a fishing line.
After saving her, the two birds fall in love. However, she must return to her flock and fly south for the winter. Eventually, Ugly’s mother finds him frozen in snow.
Luckily, her warm tears manage to thaw him out and he comes back to life – as a handsome swan! Soon, Ugly is reunited with Penny and the two swans decide to live the rest of their days in the same pond as Ugly’s loyal mother.
Brimming with memorable songs and tunes this is one musical you should not miss, especially as this is the first full-length musical to be performed by our very own Musical Theatre Group at the Old Joint Stock.
Stiles and Drewe
Where have we heard those names before? Well they’ve just had a hit musical in the West end called BETTY BLUE EYES based on the Alan Bennett film A PRIVATE FUNCTION and starred Sarah Lancashire and Reece Sheersmith.
The dynamic musical theatre songwriting partnership that is George Stiles (music) and Anthony Drewe (lyrics) have been writing together since they met at Exeter University over twenty years ago.
In 2004 they composed the new songs, additional music and lyrics, vocal and dance arrangements for the multi-award winning MARY POPPINS, having played in the West End for many years, it transferred to Broadway to critical acclaim under the Cameron Mackintosh banner.
Their first musical was TUTANKHAMUN (Northcott Theatre and Imagination Building); which they hope to revisit one day.
JUST SO was produced by Cameron Mackintosh and won the 1985 Vivian Ellis Prize…none other than Steven Spielberg then secured an option to turn it into a feature animation. Just So most recently played at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2004.
HONK!– which was commissioned by the Watermill Theatre in 1993 – HONK! Is a multi- award winning musical that even beat THE LION KING and MAMMA MIA at the 2000 Olivier Award for Best Musical.
PETER PAN– A Musical Adventure, began life as a BBC concert presented in 2001 at the Royal Festival Hall starring John Thaw as a wonderfully menacing Captain Hook. Won Best Song and the Orchestras Award at the 1996 International Musical of the Year in Denmark.
They’ve started work on that very rare thing, an original musical called Soho Cinders which is currently at workshop stage; set in modern day London SOHO CINDERS has a very contemporary feel. It’s a 21st century fable and centres on an internet love-story that blends a strong vein of satire with a story of celebrity politics. It has a delicious leading song titled ‘I’m So Over Men’…
They have also written two revues and contributed songs to a variety of theatre, TV, and radio shows, including the RSC’s SHAKESPEARE REVUE, THE CHALLENGE, and Dame Edna Everage’s LOOK AT ME WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU.
The Old Joint Stock Musical Theatre Company
The Old Joint Stock Musical Theatre Company's debut performance under the leadership of Karl Steele back in 2011 was a collection of West End & Broadway showstoppers under the title of WEST END STORIES. Featuring hits from Wicked, Les Miserable, Chess, Miss Saigon, Beauty & The Beast, Jekyll & Hyde…
The OJSMTC's next show was CHRISTMAS BY CANDLELIGHT this was free event in support of Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Basking in the glow of hundreds of candles and surrounding a 20ft Christmas tree, our resident company got us all in the Christmas spirit in true Old Joint Stock fashion and brought the venue to life as never before. With special Christmas performances from OJSMTC vocalists Karl Steele, Kate Rock, Karen Cockitt & Lydia Hackett.
Their most recent show was LULLABIES OF BROADWAY , a collection of musical theatre featuring highlights from 'Chess', 'Les Miserables', 'Phantom of the Opera', 'Sister Act' and many more. Demand for this show was so great that we had to add a third performance, after the first two sold out!
After HONK! In November the company will be presenting CHRISTMAS BY CANDLELIGHT again in the bar just before Christmas. Keep a watch for the dates….
