Isma Almas - Bombs!
Performance date - 19/01/10
Performance time - 8pm
As part of the COMEDY WEEK, Isma Almas presents her hit Edinburgh show
The Old Joint Stock Pub & Theatre presents the perfect antidote to the New Year Blues with a Week of Comedy. Featuring a different Headline act each evening, but hosted and compered by CRAIG DEELEY each evening.
Isma Almas
‘A one-woman antidote to Islamophobia’ (Leeds Guide) . Buckle up for this hilarious cultural extravaganza of a white-knuckle comedy ride. One of the most original and charming circuit comedians expertly annihilates whole herds of sacred cows.
When Isma Almas first appeared on the Northern English comedy circuit she cut a striking figure. Partly because she opened her set wearing a full burka, but also because, as a Muslim woman, her choice of subject matter in poking fun at the religious attire was firstly brave and ultimately very sharply written. So her debut Fringe show at Edinburgh in 2009 (Isma Almas Bombs) by the full-time mother and social worker was clearly something to look forward to. Isma brings that show to the OJST. Almas takes themes from earlier material in addition to talking a little more about her life and family. With an admirable lightness of touch and air of mischief, Almas is able to touch on some fairly unsavoury topics. She has the rather gentle, encouraging air of a primary school teacher, but a ready smile and a cute wrinkling of the nose make the punch lines hit harder.
Isma Almas is a very funny lady – if you like Shappi Khorsandi and Shazia Mirza then you’ll definitely like Isma!
