Night of the Unexpected
Performance date - 15/12/09
Performance time - 8pm
FRONTIERS Contemporary Music Series
Frontiers Contemporary Music Series presents Night of the Unexpected, an informal evening of musical surprises from the composition department at Birmingham Conservatoire. Featuring an eclectic array of performers including (but not limited to) Irish improviser Brian Irvine, pianist/singer/songwriter Errollyn Wallen, and a whole host of as-yet-undiscovered madcap student composers presenting brand new work hot off the page!
The evening will be hosted by the inimitable Howard Skempton, co-founder of the infamous Scratch Orchestra, who will not only gently guide us through proceedings, but will break out his accordion to join in the fray.
Expect humour. Expect noise. Expect to have your sonic preconceptions stretched to their limits! And of course, expect the unexpected!
Howard Skempton (b. 1947, Chester) is a prolific composer with more than 300 works to his name, many of them miniatures which he refers to as “the central nervous system” of his output. The quiet simplicity of his music sets him apart from the new music mainstream, and he continues to be a strong influence on an emerging generation of young British composers.
Many of his compositions have been recorded, including the hugely successful Lento performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and his recent CD on the NMC label entitled Ben Somewhen.
